Vista modular sign on wall

Modular sign systems offer sleek, professional looking signs to give an office building a unified look, inside and out.  We have partnered with Vista Signs to offer a modern and functional modular sign system called “modular curved frame technology,” or MCFT.   These modular signs offer any type of way finding sign, all with a modern, professional, unified look.  Vista describes MCFT as “contemporary euro design,” which uses a modern curved shape that is both functional and attractive.

Among the types of modular signs offered are:

  • Wall frames
  • Flag signs
  • Directory signs
  • Table stands
  • Double sided pylons

    Curved Extruded Signs

    MCFT Signs

  • Suspended signs
  • Post pylons
  • Triangular pylons
  • Lighted signs

The MCFT Advantage

Modular signs are easy to update.  The curved frame system accommodates many types of sign substrates including plastics such as styrene, metals, or paper.  The sign is easily inserted or removed to update a sign.  The curved shape keeps inserted materials firmly in place using its strong tension grip.  In addition, the frame system can be used in conjunction with engraving, vinyl, ADA, digital printing, and more.  The modular system is highly versatile since standardized units can be assembled in different ways.

Zerorez Fleet Graphics get Modern Updates

custom fleet graphics

Zerorez custom van wrap designed by Signs for Success

Fleet graphics can be intimidating – with several vehicles to outfit, you want to make sure you get the design right.  Zerorez is a great example of effective fleet wrap advertising.  The owner has steadily grown the company over 10+ years while at the same time updating his fleet graphics little by little along the way.

“I have the pleasure of working with the owner and the marketing staff every time a new vehicle comes into the fleet,” Signs for Success designer Kimberly Hoffmann explained.  Over the span of a decade, the van wrap design has remained more or less the same, but little details are changed every so often to keep the vehicle wraps fresh and modern.  “The most recent update to the design was adding the black hood and black rear doors, which seems to be trendy nowadays,” Kimberly said.

There are a few timeless details that really make these fleet van wraps pop.  Crisp graphics use the entire length of the van, and the large Zerorez logo makes the vehicle instantly recognizable.  Mixed finishes and accents are certainly trending right now in vehicle graphics, so Zerorez was smart to add touches of contrasting black to their fleet graphics.

By updating graphics, they’re not stuck with one design for too long.  Making improvements has really allowed their fleet wrap advertising to excel, improving both sales and brand recognition.

History of Ford: Custom Timeline Wall Wrap

Timeline wall wrap on auto showroom wall

Ford has a rich history of American entrepreneurship and innovation.  This custom timeline wall wrap showcases just how far Ford has come since its beginnings in the late 1800s.  The wall wrap project began when Gus Johnson Ford wanted to cover an entire length of their showroom wall with a custom printed wall covering.  Signs for Success partnered with The Quinn Group to come up with a good solution.

“When Bonnie Quinn, from The Quinn Group, asked us to brainstorm wall coverings for Gus Johnson Ford, we met her down there to do a wall test to see what materials would work best,” Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger said.  “Our options were wallpaper or decal coverings for the wall.  The wall is textured, so wallpaper was out.  We opted for 3M Control Tac high performance wrap vinyl, based on the wall test results.”  Control Tac wrap vinyl is what we frequently use on custom vehicle wraps.  It contours to fit every curve and crevice of a vehicle for a smooth paint-like finish, so it was perfect for adhering to a textured wall.

Dimensional logos and photos on timeline wall wrap

Adding Dimension to the Custom Wall Wrap

During the design process, we learned they didn’t just want a flat image, but photos and logos that stood off the wall for added dimension.  “In brainstorming, we talked about stretched canvas, printed acrylic, gatorfoam, and Sintra/PVC.  We also talked about mounting with standoffs, panel clips, and blocking out with double stick tape,” Vanessa explained.  Any of these solutions could have worked, giving a slightly different effect.  When Vanessa got the final approved artwork, however, many of the dimensional pieces were odd-shaped other than rectangular, so they opted for waterjet cut sintra/PVC at 1/4″ thick.  Adding blocks of ½” thick gator to the back of each sign gave them the 3D look Gus Johnson Ford was hoping for.

Installation went smoothly; the wall wrap was applied first, then the dimensional logos were installed with heavy-duty double stick tape on top of the wrap.  The showroom looks amazing with the new timeline wall wrap.  Signs for Success offers unique custom printing solutions for any surface.  Contact us for more information or to request a free quote!

Spokane River’s Large Banner gets Steel Cable Installation

large banner in downtown Spokane

Welcome to Spokane banner installed on cable system

The much anticipated opening of Huntington Park in downtown Spokane required special preparation to make sure the park—and the view from the park—were just perfect.

“This large banner project was initiated by the Spokane Chapter of Executive Women’s International Committee who was hosting EWI Spring Conference.  A reception was to be held in the newly renovated Huntington Park located on the south shore of the lower falls in Spokane WA,” Signs for Success owner John Bogensberger explained.  The park looked great; however, “on the opposite side of the river was a structure that while slated for repairs and rehabilitation, was still an eye sore to the view from the new park.”

Huntington Park was a project by Avista and the City of Spokane, so they sponsored a 6′ x 60′ Banner to cover the decaying wall during the event and then again one week later at the Official Grand opening of the park.

The giant banner looked great across the river, and it gave added exposure to Avista and the City of Spokane for these important events.

Large Banner Finishing and Installation

Banners aren’t meant to last forever, but we use the best industry methods to make sure ours last as long as possible.  A strong, outdoor durable 13 oz. vinyl banner material and welded hems make a robust combination.  Even though this banner would only be displayed for a few days, we needed to make sure the extra-large banner was securely attached to the old wall.

Signs for Success installed a steel cable system in the decaying wall to install the large banner on.  The banner was anchored by securing reinforced grommeted edges to two cables that ran the entire length of the banner.  Thanks to the cable system, this large banner was a success.  The simple “Welcome to Spokane” message covered the old wall and extended the beautiful space created by Huntington Park.

Aluminum Composite Lap Desks Transform Education in Africa

These lap desks are printed and laminated, double sided, then cut out, given to school kids in Africa for a great learning experience

PAL Lap desks are custom printed aluminum composite material

PAL stands for Portable Academic Lapdesk.  “PAL was born out of years of working in Malawi and Zambia and seeing the dire needs of the schools there,” PAL Non-Profit founder Jackie Wells said.  “In 2009 we developed the idea of making a lap desk that contained all the basics of education on either side of the lap desk.   This would give the students both a desk to work from and basically a visual textbook.”

It took Joel and Jackie Wells several years to develop their non-profit organization, design and copyright the lap desk, get a design patent, and try different prototypes.  During the prototype process, Jackie contacted Signs for Success to see what they could come up with.  “John was willing to think outside the box and came up with the idea of printing directly onto Aluminum Composite.   By laminating over the printing we are providing extra protection as well as UV protection,” Jackie said.Printing Direct to aluminum composite for PAL project

Aluminum Composite Material

Aluminum composite is made of two sheets of thin aluminum with a solid polyethylene core.  It is outdoor durable, heat resistant and water proof.  Lamination increases the life of the print and further protects from UV rays and normal wear and tear.

Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger helped with setup and corrections to provided art files.  Running test prints for the double sided printing took some time and tweaking to get it just right, but with approval from the customer, hundreds of these unique lap desks went to production.  Finally, in June 2014, after much preparation and determination, Joel and Jackie completed the production and distribution of 550 PALs throughout African countries Malawi and Zambia.

The distribution to village schools included teacher training.  They’ve since heard back from several teachers about the success of the lap desks.  One teacher wrote, “By seeing the PAL some of our older learners are self-correcting things they had learned wrong.”  Another wrote, “teaching becomes simple to me because learners participate actively using these PALs.”

In a letter of endorsement from the Director of Basic Education in Malawi, Dr. Chimombo states, “The PAL gains the attention of our students with its bright and colorful presentation and gives them a global perspective.  Many of our schools have limited supplies.  If we can establish the distribution of this tool into these schools the PAL will provide them with a much needed resource.  The teacher’s manual that accompanies the PAL will provide great support to instructors.”

Joel and Jackie are in the midst of a RocketHub social media campaign that will last until April 15 to raise funds to take 600 more PALs into Africa in September 2015.

Coroplast Signs: Beyond Yard Signs

Coroplast Signs: Life Sized Standee for grocery store advertising shows Tom Sherry at Spokane Trading Co Stores, cut out of Styrene, Gator, or Coro, free standing

Tom Sherry life sized coro stand for grocery store

Coroplast Signs, also known as coro, corro, corex, fluted plastic or corrugated plastic, often gets overlooked as a serious sign substrate.  Its versatility and other great qualities lend itself to several situations, indoor and out, temporary or long-term.  Even though coro is great for yard signs (perhaps its most usual niche), its potential goes far beyond the front yard.

Some other ways to use coroplast signs include:

  • Menu boards
  • Event signs
  • Directional signs
  • A-frame signs
  • Construction signs
  • Tradeshow signs
  • Standees
  • Indoor hanging signs
  • Point of purchase signs, and more!

What makes coro so versatile is its lightweight, durable material.  It’s 100% recyclable and water- and weather-resistant.  Coupled with the inexpensive price, coroplast is an easy choice for many sign solutions.

Coro is relatively inexpensive, and it can often be used in place of a banner.  “Coroplast Signs have the same look as a banner when you put it up, and it’s cheaper than banner material,” Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger explained.  “We had a customer who wanted a 3’x7’ banner, and we suggested printing to coro instead.  They got two 2’x8’ coro coroplast signs for less than it would have cost for one banner.”

Signs for Success stocks Standard and Opaque Corrugated Plastic in both 4’x 8′ and 5’x 10′ sheets.  Contact us today to get started on your next custom coro sign project!

How to Get Perfect Backlit Signs Day and Night

See the difference our triple strike method produces, everyone else in town prints backlit signs like the frog on the right, Signs for Success produces full color like the one on the left, come see us now for a fast quote

Signs for Success triple strike backlit sign test

Driving around Spokane, you may not see a whole lot of full color backlit signs.  That’s because full color outdoor backlit signs present a special challenge: constantly changing ambient light.

In the beginning of sign making, backlit signs were hand painted with translucent paint that looked great when lit from the front by the sun as well as at night when lit from behind.  The transition from hand-painting to cut vinyl made the process easier, and translucent vinyl worked well for both day and night settings.  The downside to the vinyl was that it was and still is very expensive compared to other options.  In addition to a high price tag, the vinyl could only produce spot color, so images and text had to be simple. Photos, gradients and special effects were not possible.

Digital printing has solved both of these problems, but naturally, it leads to some of its own complications.  Digitally printing a sign face is more cost effective than either hand-painting or ordering and cutting several colors of translucent vinyl.  It also allows for a multitude of nearly unlimited color choices, and digitally printed gradients produce a realistic, vibrant image.  The complication arises when different lighting – from the outside by the sun, and from the inside by electrical lighting – hits the print.  Backlit signs have to not only look good at night when they’re lit from behind, but they also have to look good all day long when the light source comes from outside. “Traditional digitally printed backlit signs look washed out at night.  One option is to bump up saturation, which makes the sign too dark during the day,” Signs for Success owner John Bogensberger explained.

Balance Eternalle Day Spa in Spokane wanted more visibility at night, so this backlit signs light up great and shows hot stone massage

Balance Eternelle Day Spa Backlit Sign during the day

The solution?  Over several weeks of testing, we found that the best combination was printing the image in color, then a layer of 50% opacity white ink, and finally another layer of color.  These three layers make it possible for the image to shine through no matter what direction the light comes from.  “During the day, the white backs up the outer layer, and during the night, the second layer of color comes through due to the backlighting,” John explained. “This allows the sign to look great day or night.”

In the picture above, we printed the same image using three different processes.  The image on the right shows a “single strike,” or just one layer of ink.  This type of printing is great for most signs, but as you can see, the backlighting washes out the image at night.  The image on the left shows the same image printed on the front of the sign face, then printed in reverse on the back side.  This “double strike” method gives better color, but can be very difficult to register exactly on both sides.  The center image is a “triple strike” with color, white ink, then color printed on the sign face.  Our test image is printed with 100% opacity white ink, but by lowering the opacity to 50%, the image is bright and clear.

Spokane First backlit sign

Even with the extra ink and extra printing time required for a triple strike, this is still the most cost effective option for vibrant full color backlit signs that look great in any lighting conditions.  The color will be sure to last at least 3-5 years, and if the sign is laminated, you can expect 5-7 years of life.

We coined the phrase “backlit triple strike” – since perfecting the method, we just don’t do backlit signs any other way.  “Triple strike” refers to the three trips the material takes through the printer, first receiving the sign graphics in full color, then a layer of white ink, then another run of the graphics in full color.  This technique allows the intended color and saturation to show through whether the light source comes from outside the sign or from within, creating great backlit signs day or night.

Golf Cart Wraps: Avery vs. 3M

Blue golf cart wraps with black striping

Blue golf cart wrap with black striping

In an effort to find the very best single color, or “color change” wrap vinyl, we compared 3M and Avery car wrap products on two golf cart wraps projects.  Each golf cart received a color change wrap – one using 3M IJ180Cv3 and the other with Avery Supreme Wrapping Film.

The orange golf cart was wrapped with 3M and the blue was wrapped with Avery.  Both golf cart wraps had multiple layers.  In addition to the eye-catching orange car wrap film, Ron Davis Landscaping added their company name and slogan in matte black to the front and sides of the golf cart.  To add graphics to a color change wrap, we first apply the wrap film to the entire vehicle, then simply add cut lettering or other cut vinyl graphics on top of the wrap.  This makes placement much easier than printing graphics onto the full wrap itself.  Take wheel well graphics for example – adding a website or other text over the curve of the wheel is much simpler when you don’t have to factor in the curves and body lines of the vehicle when placing graphics in just the right spot.

The blue golf cart was a personal vehicle, and black striping added the finishing touch to this color change wrap.  The blue vinyl wrap paired with striping gave this old golf cart a much needed facelift.  By adding lettering, striping or other graphics to a color change wrap, you can make a statement or increase your marketing in a unique way.

Orange golf cart wraps with black lettering

Orange golf cart wrap with black lettering

Both car wraps turned out great, and are comparable when looking at the final product.  The main differences appeared during installation.

We found that the Avery car wrap vinyl was repositionable while the 3M is a more aggressive adhesive.  When a vinyl is repositionable, it allows for wiggle room during an install.  Being able to lift up the vinyl and reposition it to get placement just right without stretching or compromising the material makes a perfect vehicle wrap easier to achieve.

Both the 3M and the Avery vinyl are high-performance wrap films so they are highly conformable and last 5-7 years.  However, we also noticed the 3M material tended to curl at the edges and was more sensitive to heat, making it a little more difficult to work with during installation.  Although they are both great materials, Avery stands out as the more user-friendly of the two.

“We found we liked Avery the best.  3M materials are a lot thicker and don’t offer the ability to reposition that Avery does, so it’s not as friendly a material to work with,” Signs for Success production manager Denise Gillit said.  “We still use 3M for many vehicle wrap projects, but for color change wraps in particular, we choose Avery Supreme Wrapping Film.”  Signs for Success owner John Bogensberger added, “3M would only be used for a color change wrap if the client wanted a particular color not available in Avery.”

Here’s what Avery has to say about their film:

“Every automobile is a potential canvas…Custom paint colors can look fantastic, but they’re also costly and time consuming.  We developed Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film as a simple, fast and cost-effective way for drivers and businesses to accent, update or completely alter the appearance of a vehicle’s finish-while protecting the original paint job from chips and wear.”

The biggest advantage of a color change wrap is that you can change the color of your vehicle without affecting the market value.  Color change vinyl is not only great for changing up the look of your vehicle, it can make an older vehicle or paint job look brand new.  For businesses, color change golf cart wraps offer a uniform look among company vehicles, and colors can be matched to or paired with logo graphics.

How to Install Boat Wraps

Custom boat wraps for Alaskan fishing boats designed by Signs for Success

Custom boat wraps for Alaskan fishing boats designed by Signs for Success

Boat wraps are installed much the same way that vehicle wraps are installed.  We have noticed some common mistakes, and we can recommend a few simple steps for successfully installing boat graphics, or any vehicle graphics.

Some common problems are getting the placement wrong, overstretching the material, or heat-setting it  improperly.  “I think one thing people have a hard time with is just the fear factor.  Working with vinyl and the fact that you just spent a lot of money for it is scary.  You don’t want to mess it up.  Easier to leave it to those that do it daily,” Signs for Success production manager Denise Gillit said.

Another problem we have seen is wet applying graphics.  George Basargen worked with Signs for Success to design two over-the-top boat wraps for his Alaskan fishing boats.  We installed the Roulette boat wrap in Tum Tum, WA.  Then the customer took the boat graphics for the Black Pearl with him to Alaska and installed them himself.  On a rainy spring day in Alaska, George tried to install the vinyl boat graphics by wet applying them.  To “wet apply” means to spray the surface you are applying the vinyl to with a chemical like Windex or dish soap and water.  Most cut vinyl can be wet applied.  However, a high performance repositionable vinyl like the 3M Control Tac used for these boat wraps cannot be wet applied.

“Control Tac has a releasable adhesive so you can reposition it many times if you don’t get it in the right spot the first time.  We would never suggest anyone wet apply a repositionable vinyl like Control Tac.  You will have a much harder time getting it to stick properly,” Signs for Success designer Will Oakley explained.

Because the vinyl was not sticking properly, George called us, and we walked him through the best method to use over the phone.  “He installed everything successfully and is really happy with how it all turned out,” Will said.  In spite of his setback during install, George said, “It has been great working with Will.  [The boat wraps] look great!”

custom boat wraps, Let Signs for Success wrap or add graphics to your race boat or jet boat in Spokane and Coeur d'Alene

Stripes, logos, numbering added to race boats

Here’s how we install a boat wraps in 5 easy steps (Use these steps when working with a high performance repositionable vinyl):

  1. First, clean the surface.
  2. Place graphics where you want them using masking tape.
  3. Carefully peel backing away in small portions, smoothing the vinyl as you go.
  4. Use a squeegee to smooth any air bubbles out.
  5. Use a heat gun to set the vinyl.

Control Tac, as well as other repositionable high performance vinyls, should first be positioned in the appropriate place on the vehicle surface.  Then, by removing portions of the backing little by little and smoothing the vinyl with the right tools, the material is applied evenly without stretching or wrinkling.  To set the material, use a heat gun to heat the material in small portions at a time and smooth it out again.  This helps the vinyl to conform permanently to all the curves and contours of the boat or vehicle.

We recommend having boat wraps installed professionally since the techniques required as well as the environment can play an important part in the success or failure of an install.  However, if circumstances prevent you from having a pro install your boat graphics, by following these steps, you can achieve a professional boat wrap on your own.
