When Maury Ray and Keith Snyder from Community Colleges of Spokane came in to brainstorm ideas for a wall of fame they were looking for nice plaques on a budget. “We started with pricing for cast plaques, but found the price was prohibitive,” Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger said.  After brainstorming some other options for nice looking custom plaques, we decided to try printing on brushed silver ACM.  Aluminum Composite Material has the look of solid metal. It has aluminum faces with a solid plastic core that is great for printing and is extremely durable.  ACM comes in white, black, brushed silver, brushed gold, and a several other colors.  ACM is a versatile material since you can change the look of the print by simply changing the finish of the metal.

To test, we produced a sample print on brushed silver that turned out great.  “We printed black and white images of past coaches with a short paragraph of their coaching history. Brushed aluminum standoffs were used to mount these to the wall, giving a great look,” Vanessa said.  For protection against scratches and other wear and tear, we laminated each plaque with a matte protective laminate.

Then the SCC staff did the wall creation and installation in a grid pattern.   The black and white metal plaques against rich wood planked walls give the display a clean and classic look.

In addition to the brushed silver plaques, we also did eleven smaller plaques on the brushed gold ACM for coaches who have passed.  On these, we added white ink as a layer under the photo area to give the photos depth and dimension, making a great memory wall.Printed Aluminum wall plaques for wall of fame

“Overall, we came in far under budget, and the look is awesome. As they add more coaches in the future, this is an affordable option over cast plaques,” Vanessa explained.

Although we have worked with  Paint Room Studios to produce custom acrylic signs for Twigs in the past, our most recent partnership brought new challenges and experience, from a fun photo shoot to creating custom signs with our new UV printable acrylic.  These acrylic signs work double duty as both attractive bar art and a privacy screen.

Twigs’ newest location in Salt Lake City, Utah presented some unique challenges.  Because of laws in Utah, they couldn’t use the usual martini artwork behind the bar (pictured left).  In addition, they needed the artwork to double as a privacy screen since drinks cannot be mixed at the bar.  The solution to the first challenge was to come up with a new concept for the design.  The legs and feet of people standing or sitting at the bar became the new image.  “They needed male models so Joe and I showed up,” Signs for Success designer Will Oakley said.  “My legs and feet are featured in three of the four panels, and Joe’s legs are in one of the panels.  It was a fun modeling shoot.”

Once Will received the edited photos from the client, it was time to tackle the second challenge.  “I added the white, which was a little tricky.  We backed the important parts of the image – legs, feet and chairs – with 100% white to give that depth perception and bring those objects to the foreground.  I made a special layer for the 100% white and traced legs, feet, and barstools.  The rest of the image is backed with 10% white which gives the background a semi-transparent dusted crystal look,” Will explained.  The dusted crystal effect is perfect for added privacy.  Each of the 4’ x 6’ acrylic panels were installed on location into standard window channels to serve as both art and the needed privacy screen behind the bar.

Our new UV printable acrylic was a dream to work with.  In the past we have used standard acrylic, but because it’s so glossy the ink doesn’t stick very well and we have to cover the printed surface with several layers of vinyl laminate to protect the ink.  UV printable acrylic offers a better printing surface.  Straight out the printer, the ink is dry and fairly scratch-proof.  We still cover the printed area with a single layer of laminate for added protection.  The front of each panel was also laminated in a matte laminate to give an anti-glare finish.  UV printable acrylic signs are perfect indoor signs for businesses and restaurants.  They are durable, sleek, and scratch and fade resistant.

To create these wall signs, we used two layers of 6mm PVC.  The signs were individually shape-cut by Spokane WaterKnife to achieve a smooth edge and custom shape.  The second layer of PVC hides the string of LED lights that are mounted on the back just inside the outer edge.  The sign faces are cut high-performance vinyl, which was laminated, then applied to the shape-cut PVC.  The finished product looks sleek and professional.

Snap’s mission is to help eliminate poverty by providing connections and opportunities for people of low income to help themselves.  Snap wanted to display a variety of text and photo pieces down the hallway.  By choosing bold background colors for text and alternating text with photo prints, the custom wall display is colorful and interesting.  Design, layout, printing and installation were completed by Signs for Success.  The signs were installed using cables and standoff mounts to give the whole piece a dimensional look.

Corrugated plastic is weather-proof and can for last several years.  To get the most life out of a coro billboard sign, try to place it where it won’t get full direct sunlight for several hours of the day, which fades color over time.  Extreme cold temperatures may cause the material to become brittle over time; however, this Spokane sign endures freezing temperatures several months out of the year, and is still looking great years later.  Corrugated plastic can also be used for permanent indoor signs, large and small.  The lightweight material can be hung, framed, or cut into a custom standee.  Coro is extremely versatile as well as cost-effective.

Next IT, an innovator in digital customer service, has built several client walls in their office using 3mm PVC signs Spokane.  “Every time we sign a new client and I get to install a new logo on the wall the employees always have positive comments,” Next IT Associate Creative Director Renae Wood said.  “We take on each client and project with our whole hearts so there’s a sense of pride seeing the logo of the project that they are working on up on the wall.”  Walls devoted to signs or a collage of signs can add to morale, help employees work towards a team goal, or thank sponsors.

These full color signs are individually printed and hung to show the companies they partner with.  There are three such walls of signs in their Spokane office building.  “The signs have turned out perfect.  Both the material and printing are high-quality,” Renae said.

Many non-profit companies rely heavily on support from generous sponsors and individuals to make their organizations a success.  What better way to acknowledge the magnanimous donor than a position on a donor wall?  We recently had the opportunity to work with Heidi Moll from Quinn Group Advertising & Marketing to produce their design for two donor walls at 2nd Harvest’s new Volunteer lounge.  This was a fun project that incorporated many mediums, including dimensional letters and custom wallpaper, to accomplish the desired effect.

The backgrounds of each donor wall were printed on Type II commercial wall paper.  There are many textures available, from smooth to textured, but we went with Nassau Dunes which has a light pebble texture.

The white dimensional letters are 1/4″ cut acrylic letters. The gold dimensional letters and wheat stalks are 1/2″ black PVC plastic with a gold metal laminate.  The Chemetal line offers a huge variety of metal finishes, including the popular polished or brushed gold or silver, allowing for a truly unique look. Plume Goldenrod was the finish chosen to enhance the wheat stock effect. We finished off the donor walls with oak trim stained a deep mahogany brown that really finished off the whole project.  In time the open areas will be filled with brass plaques with capital budget sponsors who help this worthwhile non-profit complete its mission.
