Custom Dry Fly Distilling bottle boxes on raw cedar

Spokane’s Dry Fly Distilling produces award-winning vodka, gin and wheat whiskey using only locally grown grains and botanicals.  Dry Fly prides themselves on being a true craft distillery with a farm to bottle approach, so when it came to producing a special edition box for their vodka, they needed a printer who could print to their raw cedar boards from a local sawmill.  Lee’s Pallet Service constructed the boxes for Dry Fly and brought the approximately 9.5 x 5-inch lids to Signs for Success for custom wood printing.

Printing to raw cedar required a lot of testing to get things just right.  First, we printed the color directly to the wood.  That worked well; however, we were looking for perfect color.  Hoping to get a brighter red, we then tested the process with a white underflood, or white ink printed beneath the red.  The first run gave us the perfect color we were looking for, but there were traces of white that could be seen around the edges of the logo.  Trimming the edges of the white to just under the stroke size of the image solved the problem, and it gave the customer the look he really wanted.  We printed 100 limited edition box lids four at a time on our HP FB500 Flatbed printer for the first run.  They were a hit, and we continue to do runs of this custom wood printing for Dry Fly.

The design was created by Billie Gaura of Rainmaker, printed and laminated by Signs for Success and installed by Gale Fleming Wallpaper.  We printed the black dry erase wall on Smooth Type II Wallpaper, then laminated the print with dry erase glossy film, which makes the wallpaper dry erase compatible.  Our dry-erase laminate works just as well as the real things, making scheduling (and rescheduling) a breeze.

Maximum Exposure Photography recently brought in original digital artwork to be printed on brushed aluminum, and they provided three blank aluminum pieces for the job.  “The customer had a very specific border he wanted – 1.5″ from the top and left, and 2.5″ from the right and bottom.  He had already made custom brushed textures in those areas before printing,” Signs for Success designer Joe Wilson explained.

Using white ink underflood, we printed the sea monster image to each aluminum piece in full color.  Our HP FB500 uses UV light during printing to cure the ink as soon as it is printed.  This makes it possible for both white ink and color to be printed in a single pass through the printer.  “You load it once, and the printer prints white first, then a couple of passes later, it prints the color.  The lamps on each side cure it every time it makes a pass.  When it comes out, it’s ready to go,” Signs for Success production specialist Chris Komski explained.

“The end result was eye-popping color on brushed aluminum,” Joe said of the metal prints Spokane.

This isn’t the first time we have printed photo images on metal.  We printed several of professional photographer Crystal Toreson’s prints on black diamond metal plate.  Crystal expressed it wasn’t easy at first to find a printer who would print on her scrap metal, but once she found Signs for Success, the process was smooth and successful.  The final result was very industrial and eclectic, perfectly welding Crystal’s modern industrial style photography with her recycled metal display method.

There is now a new and innovative approach to custom wallpaper, thanks to HP Wall Art Design Studio program.  The HP Wall Art Solution is a cloud-based web service that helps you design your own custom wall coverings from home, then send the file to Signs for Success to be printed in easy-to-install panels.  To begin, enter your wall dimensions as well as any windows, doors, electrical outlets, etc.  This way, you get a realistic look at how the graphics will look on your particular wall.

After inputting your dimensions and room features, you “add the wall paper, font or other objects like flourishes to your design.  The program allows you to make objects and text bigger or smaller, and move and rotate them,” Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger explained.  The design service has a vast library of high-quality images, or you can use personal photos or images and text to create a unique design.  “When you are satisfied with the design, HP sends Signs for Success the design to be printed to wall paper panels.”

HP describes their product as “fast, easy and intuitive…a simple, comprehensive tool…for residential, retail or commercial spaces, from wall coverings to posters and canvas.”  With wallpaper making such a big comeback in home décor and office decorating, we think this is the perfect application of the new HP Wall Art program.

Signs for Success prints custom wallpaper to a many different products.  Type II Commercial wallpapers are a permanent installation and are ideal for restaurants, hotels, etc.  They are textured and will give off a gas to sound a smoke alarm when heat or danger of fire is near. There is also a smooth, water-based adhesive wallpaper we use, HP PVC-free wallpaper, that is suitable for home settings, yet can be easily removed in the future.  This type of wallpaper is applied with just water and comes off cleanly when removed. Arena Rumble is a Spokane, Washington-based MMA fight promotion company.  They host professional MMA events throughout the Northwest each year.  One big advertising opportunity for them and other MMA companies is in the same place you’ll find striking, grappling, and eventually, the victor—right on the mat.

Signs for Success created the mat decals featuring sponsors’ logos placed around the perimeter of the mat, corner pads and rail pads.  Graphics were printed on an intermediate vinyl with removable adhesive so decals can be removed after an event without leaving behind lots of sticky residue.  This makes cleanup after an event quick and easy, and decals can be changed out for different events or as sponsors change.  These ring decals were used for the Rising Stars 2 event which was aired on KSKN channel 22.

Try this Blending Technique in your Custom Vehicle Wrap Design

Contractor Van WrapVehicle wraps often require several printed panels to cover an entire vehicle.  Matching seams up is critical to achieving a seamless wrap.  Especially when a geometric pattern is involved, matching lines up between panels gets a little tricky.  Here is one blending technique you can use in the design stage to make installation simpler. Our Handyman’s logo graphics involved a sunburst in shades of blue topped with several circles.  It’s an eye-catching and modern design, but it’s also a potential geometric nightmare when it comes time to install several printed panels.  When working with the file, graphic designer Will Oakley noticed that when the panels were in place, the sun bursts went in completely different directions.  “They would have crossed perpendicular to each other,” he said.  “Not only were there sunbursts, which are always a problem, but there were circles on top of the sunbursts.”

The circles began small on the outside and got larger towards the middle.  Without blending, three sets of dots would have met in a dramatic size difference rather than the gradual gradation intended.  Will solved the problem by fading to blue on the panel edges.  On all the physical edges of the vehicle, like the where the back of the vehicle meets the sides, he faded to a single color.  The subtle fade helps to blend the sides and the back of the van so that lines appear smooth and unbroken.  The back and sides were the main issue.  When it came to the hood connecting with the fenders, “they lined up almost perfectly.” Will explained.  “Sometimes we get lucky.”  The end result was a vibrant and seamless van wrap we hope Our Handyman will enjoy for several years to come.
