10 Trade Show Booth Design Tips

Research shows you have about 3 seconds to catch someone’s attention at a trade show.  There may be hundreds of exhibitors at a show, so how will your booth stand out?  When it comes to attracting viewers, it’s all about trade show booth design.  Just like any sign or vehicle wrap, when it comes to your trade show booth, you need to get your message across in a simple, clear and creative way.  When you drive down the highway, billboard after billboard appears in your view.  What makes you read some and not others?  Bold colors, an enticing image, a catchy phrase?  Here are 10 tips that will make your trade show booth design even more effective:

  1. Every trade show booth should have a large visual backdrop.  This is the largest graphic space and the place trade show attendees will look first for information.
  2. Make sure your design is centered on one large image (as opposed to many small ones or lots of text).

    Your image should reflect a single focal point of your business.  A fence company at a Home Show should use a large picture of a popular style of fence they supply as their backdrop, but not all companies have such an obvious solution.  Think about your products or services.  Is there one image that describes what you can offer?  Is there an image current customers already know you by or associate with your company?

  4. Your company name and other branding material such as logo or slogan should also be prominent in the trade show booth design.
  5. Use text sparingly.  Leave more detailed information for pamphlets and brochures.
  6. If text appears in the design, make it count by focusing on a few benefits of your product or service rather than just a list of your services.
  7. Be consistent with branding.  If your logo is green and gold, don’t design your trade show booth to be red and black.  You want your current customers to recognize you and new customers to remember you.  Consistent branding throughout materials and over time is essential to building your brand and brand recognition.
  8. A little white space is good.  White space, or negative space, is a portion of a design that is left unmarked.  However, white space is not merely blank space, but is an important aspect of aesthetic appeal.  White space can allow for creative image placement, adding style without demanding attention, and it helps keep things looking neat and professional.
  9. Keep table give away  branded items neat so they don’t distract from the overall design. Whenever possible have items displayed vertically in holders, not laying flat on the table.
  10. Signs for Success helped Snap Spokane create this unique wall display of stand off signs.  Cables suggest an industrial look, while the mix of photo prints, clear acrylic logo panels and brushed aluminum signs give an eclectic vibe.  This well designed wall display looks altogether modern, polished and professional.

Snap’s mission is to help eliminate poverty by providing connections and opportunities for people of low income to help themselves.  Snap wanted to display a variety of text and photo pieces down the hallway.  By choosing bold background colors for text and alternating text with photo prints, the custom wall display is colorful and interesting.  Design, layout, printing and installation were completed by Signs for Success.  The signs were installed using cables and standoff mounts to give the whole piece a dimensional look.

Our production team printed these dasher board banners on 13oz vinyl banner material, and they were mounted to the padded dasher boards on site with double stick banner tape.  13oz vinyl banners are outdoor durable – they can last several years outdoors, or they can be stored and replaced each season for an even longer banner life.  Vinyl banners even look great at indoor arenas, trade shows and other indoor events.

Large fabric pole banners add a beautiful finishing touch to one building that has been part of extensive renovations at Valley View Middle School in Snohomish, Washington.  The school added to the campus between 2011-2012 with upgrades, expansions, and new signage.  We printed these colorful fabric banners onto pack cloth for a unique twist on traditional vinyl banners.  The double-sided banners were digitally printed one side at a time, then sewn together.

The architect leading the construction project at Valley View submitted the graphics to be printed.  Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger added bleed to each image to make sure all edges were clean and professional looking.  She also reversed the images to be able to print the opposite side of each banner, taking special care to ensure music symbols were printed correctly and not reversed.  “These banners printed beautifully on the pack cloth,” Vanessa said.  The colors are vibrant and add festivity to the newly renovated building.

At Signs for Success we pride ourselves on “Quick Turns, Perfect Color and Outstanding Customer Service!”  Recently, we got a call from Emily Galen at Boston Barricade in Florida who needed a “Quick Turn” on mall wall wraps in time for the Thanksgiving Shopping Weekend.  Their client Francesca’s was opening a new store at River Park Square in downtown Spokane, WA.

The construction barricade had been installed but the wall wraps needed to be printed and installed in less than 24 hours.  Whenever possible we want to measure before we print to make sure the files the client is supplying will fit the space.  The call came in mid-afternoon, and we were able to get to the mall at 5:00pm to take measurements, which in this case averted problems since the client did not have accurate measurements of the barricade.

The scramble was then on to get the art re-sent with the corrected measurements. Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger was able to work with Christopher Hayden, Manager of Graphic Services at Boston Barricade to facilitate getting the print files pushed to production that evening. “I was checking the files and pushing them through as quickly as Christopher could upload them,” Vanessa said.  “All told it was 457 megs of graphic files which worked into a production file of 22 panels that were 52″ wide and 72” tall.   The total graphic area was 6′ tall by over 100′ long.”  Despite the challenges of such a short deadline coupled with changes to artwork and a 3-hour time difference, we had the job printing by 7:00pm.

The printing took just over four hours, and was done by 11:30pm that evening, ready for the install team the next morning.  We printed graphics on 3M adhesive vinyl.  The adhesive is removable which means when the store is ready to open the graphics can be removed and the barricade panels disassembled and ready to ship to the next location. This reuse of the barricades minimizes expense to the client and reduces waste in the landfill.
