Although we have worked with  Paint Room Studios to produce custom acrylic signs for Twigs in the past, our most recent partnership brought new challenges and experience, from a fun photo shoot to creating custom signs with our new UV printable acrylic.  These acrylic signs work double duty as both attractive bar art and a privacy screen.

Twigs’ newest location in Salt Lake City, Utah presented some unique challenges.  Because of laws in Utah, they couldn’t use the usual martini artwork behind the bar (pictured left).  In addition, they needed the artwork to double as a privacy screen since drinks cannot be mixed at the bar.  The solution to the first challenge was to come up with a new concept for the design.  The legs and feet of people standing or sitting at the bar became the new image.  “They needed male models so Joe and I showed up,” Signs for Success designer Will Oakley said.  “My legs and feet are featured in three of the four panels, and Joe’s legs are in one of the panels.  It was a fun modeling shoot.”

Once Will received the edited photos from the client, it was time to tackle the second challenge.  “I added the white, which was a little tricky.  We backed the important parts of the image – legs, feet and chairs – with 100% white to give that depth perception and bring those objects to the foreground.  I made a special layer for the 100% white and traced legs, feet, and barstools.  The rest of the image is backed with 10% white which gives the background a semi-transparent dusted crystal look,” Will explained.  The dusted crystal effect is perfect for added privacy.  Each of the 4’ x 6’ acrylic panels were installed on location into standard window channels to serve as both art and the needed privacy screen behind the bar.

Our new UV printable acrylic was a dream to work with.  In the past we have used standard acrylic, but because it’s so glossy the ink doesn’t stick very well and we have to cover the printed surface with several layers of vinyl laminate to protect the ink.  UV printable acrylic offers a better printing surface.  Straight out the printer, the ink is dry and fairly scratch-proof.  We still cover the printed area with a single layer of laminate for added protection.  The front of each panel was also laminated in a matte laminate to give an anti-glare finish.  UV printable acrylic signs are perfect indoor signs for businesses and restaurants.  They are durable, sleek, and scratch and fade resistant.

Are you looking for a truly unique sign for your office or lobby?  There are ways to make a big impact with lobby signs without breaking the budget.  Oral Surgery Plus in Spokane was interested in a large glass sign with a beveled edge, but because glass would be very expensive, not to mention heavy and fragile, we recommended an acrylic sign with unique custom accents.

“The customer was looking for something flashy and substantial. We accommodated with 3/4″ thick clear acrylic and huge stand-offs.  It makes for a high impact sign that you see the second you walk in their office,” Signs for Success designer Will Oakley explained.

By using eight XXL standoffs to mount the acrylic sign, the display adds dimension to the wall and creates a major focal point in the office.  Acrylic is a great rigid sign material because it is sturdy, durable, and comes in a variety of translucence levels and thicknesses.  By using clear acrylic for this project, we could add “frosted glass” dusted crystal vinyl to the backside of the sign to make this piece really special.  An added bonus is that applying vinyl to the back of the sign will protect the material from wear and tear.  Finally, custom painted acrylic letters and logo were installed on the front of the sign.

Thanks to great sign materials and a little designer creativity, this office sign is sure to “stand out” and make a big statement for many years to come!

To create these wall signs, we used two layers of 6mm PVC.  The signs were individually shape-cut by Spokane WaterKnife to achieve a smooth edge and custom shape.  The second layer of PVC hides the string of LED lights that are mounted on the back just inside the outer edge.  The sign faces are cut high-performance vinyl, which was laminated, then applied to the shape-cut PVC.  The finished product looks sleek and professional.

Clear Vinyl Custom SUV Wrap

Clear Vinyl Wrap vehicleThe custom SUV wrap design for a North Wall Schools vehicle features simple composition.  “I was looking for a logo and a few words – a tag line,” Jan Swanson of North Wall Schools explained.  Too often, people want to cram as much information as possible into their vehicle graphics.  The logo and tagline on the sides and website on the back of this vehicle send a clear message without obstructing the design.

We used clear 3M Control Tac vinyl to continue the simplicity of the design.  The clear vinyl offers protection without altering or clashing with the Highlander’s original pearl white paint color.  “It was a really cool effect because the metallic color in the paint shows through the graphics,” designer Will Oakley said.

3M Clear Vinyl WrapFor most of our clear vinyl projects, we print white ink under the color to make an image opaque, otherwise the image is transparent and the color will lack vibrancy.  This project was unique because we were applying the clear vinyl to an already somewhat white surface.  The pearl white color did provide the white background needed to make the color really pop, but since it wasn’t pure white, colors were a little skewed when put against the vehicle.

“We had to do several color tests to find the right color using her car as the base white color.  To do this we printed dozens and dozens of squares in the colors she wanted and actually placed them on the car to find a color she liked,” Will explained.  “She loves the effect we achieved.”

“It’s great, I really like it.  I still get comments on it,” Jan said, adding, “I’m thinking of getting another van done in a similar way.”  A custom SUV wrap, partial wraps, or car decals, are a great advertising option for any business, school or organization.  As always, simple graphics with minimal text are best, and this clear vinyl partial wrap is an excellent example.

Updating an old post sign can be an easy decision, but where there are strict regulations, it can get a little tricky.  Dr. Melissa Loucks at Ivory Denture Clinic knew it was time for a new sign when the old one started flaking, but the landlord would not allow for a new structure to be installed.  The biggest challenge was how to update the sign while sticking to the landlord’s rules – that is, without replacing the existing structure and not changing anything significant to the sign.

“We initially proposed a new vinyl post & rail sign system, but the landlord did not approve the change,” Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger said.  What finally got approved was to take out the old sign faces and replace with newly designed faces, as well as a new coat of paint for the post sign structure.

The old post sign faces were made of corrugated plastic and were brittle and flaking.  The new sign is made of 3mm PVC, which is smoother and will look good much longer.

“When we pulled out the old sign faces, we found the rails were rotted, so we replaced them,” Vanessa explained.  “Then we primed and painted the structure to the new color and put in the new faces.”  This post sign makeover turned out great.  With a fresh coat of paint to match a fresh design, not to mention the repaired rails and more durable sign product, this office post sign will look good for many years to come.
