Quinn Group Solid Waste dimensional standee

We offer completely custom standees, including 3D standees.  The graphics for these three-dimensional tabletop stands were designed by Quinn Group for Spokane Regional Solid Waste System, and they were printed, cut and assembled by Signs for Success.

For the best use of material, we suggested 32.5” x 23.5”-sized standees.  “They wanted 36” x 26” when we first started, but material usage had too much waste, and it saved a bundle to do six per sheet rather than only three per sheet at the bigger size,” Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger said.

We used three different materials to create the multi-dimensional look of the 3D standees.3D POP Display

First, the background was cut out of gatorplast, a material that is rigid and thick enough to stand on its own without the material bending. Next, the recycle can and grass graphics were cut out of .040 polystyrene.  Polystyrene is a slightly thinner material that can be cut in-house on our plotter.  The plotter gives us the ability to contour cut signage, and it can achieve both the curvy swoosh of the grass and the angular cuts of the trash can.  Half-inch pieces of polystyrene were used as spacers between each element to give the stands their 3D look.  Finally, we used corrugated plastic to construct the stand that was added to the back.  The stand on the back is angled slightly so the entire standee leans back.  “We did not want it to be too front heavy and fall on its face, so leaning back was a good solution,” Vanessa explained.

Whether we use one material or three, flat image or 3D, we will conceptualize and create the perfect look for your custom standee.  Signs for Success is a locally owned family business in Spokane, and we strive for excellent customer service, perfect color, and quick turnaround on every project.  Our large production facility allows us to design, print and install everything in-house.  Get quality service and a quick turnaround on custom 3D standees; See More Standees

Golf in the Northwest retractable banner stand

One thing we love about retractable banner stands is that they can be used over and over again, even if your message changes.  That’s one piece of hardware that will last all seasons and through different events or tradeshows – all you have to do is switch out the banner.

“In most cases, we can replace the banner on your hardware.  Just bring in your banner stand and any spec sheets you have on it,” Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger said.  We recently printed a replacement banner for a customer-provided retractable banner stand.  The banner was printed on 15oz Super Smooth banner material.  This particular material is great for retractable stands because it comes with a finished edge and keeps its form when pulled out.  In other words, the edges won’t curl in, obscuring your message.

There are many different models of banner stands out there, but most of them can be classified as either retractable or some sort of pop-up stand.  The two stands we stock (although we have many more that we can order in) are the Silverwing Retractable Banner Stand and the Grasshopper Banner Stand.

The Silverwing banner stand comes in a 33″ width with up to 8 vertical feet of visual space.  It can house your custom banner, making travel and storage safe and easy.  When you’re ready to display the banner, it pulls out and stands on its own.  The Grasshopper Banner Stand is a foldable frame stand with adjustable height and width.  When set up, the banner is placed upon the four hooks that stretch out and display the banner.

Whatever model you might already have, we can usually create a banner that will work with the hardware.  There’s no reason to let an old retractable banner stand or pop-up banner stand go to waste.  Let us help you update your message today!

As a high volume producer of custom signs Spokane, we have to make sure that color translates correctly from a customer’s vision to design, all the way to print.  Because color varies from device to device throughout the production process, there are several basic color rules that need to be respected in order to get the end result just right.  I sat down with Signs for Success Designer Will Oakley and Production Manager Denise Gillit to get their take on the importance of color in print.

Color Basics

There are a few color basics that every customer should understand when beginning the sign buying process.  The colors we see on computer screens will never be exactly the same as colors we see in print.  This is because the colors we see on computers, digital cameras, televisions and other screen-based technology is produced by RGB (Red, Green Blue) light while the colors on printed materials are produced by light reflecting off of CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) inks.

“When you see a color on your computer screen it is made up of RGB (Red, Green, Blue).  When we print a color we print CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black).  These colors translate differently from one format to another,” Will explained.

What would you want customers to know about color?

Denise: Different colors mean different things to different people.  If I say green, you may think of grass but what I meant was apple green.  If I say blue do you think of Dodger blue (05) or Pepsi blue (sapphire)?

Will: Color varies Printer to printer, screen to screen, material to material.  Even the terminology for color varies.  Like Denise said, when you tell me you want Plum that could mean any number of 30 shades of purple and magenta.  The other challenge we have with color is monitor calibration.  I could send you a proof for production and the red could be amazing on my screen but when you look at it on your screen it may be washed out and pink.  This is affected by the calibration of your monitor i.e.: the brightness, hues, contrast and even monitor type (LCD, LED, or CRT) all play a part in changing the colors you’re viewing.

What kinds of things are important to consider when selecting colors for print?

Denise: What background color is your print going on?  Your colors can look different when they are put up against certain colors.  Lighting is also very important; is it fluorescent, incandescent, white white, blue white, red white?  All of these affect the final outcome.

Will: Denise covered most of this one.  Placement of the object and its surrounding environment are key.  The light reference the color will actually be viewed in is critical.  The laminate we place on the material can possibly shift the color, so it’s important to know if the customer picked the color from a laminated sample or an un-laminted sample.  “What is your long term marketing vision?” would be another good question.  Is this going to be the only car wrap you do?  Or do you want the banner we print next week to match your car wrap perfectly?

We print CMYKw (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, white)…do we have other colors like Light Cyan that we also print with?

See the difference our triple strike method produces, everyone else in town prints backlit like the frog on the right, Signs for Success produces full color like the one on the left, come see us now for a fast quote

Signs for Success triple strike backlit sign test

Denise: On the HP Designjet 9000 we use CMYKcm.  We can use that on the HP FB500, but we prefer to use white.  Light Cyan (c) and Light Magenta (m) are taken out of the HP FB500 so that we may run White ink, allowing us to print on clear and non-white substrates.

Will: Denise nailed this one.

To sum things up, we can hit literally thousands of colors with CMYK printing.  Even if the color in a proof looks slightly off on your computer screen, to make sure we’ve got the color right, we will do test prints before printing an entire job.  That way, we make sure the color is perfect, and if it’s not, we can tweak the color by adding or subtracting one or more of the key components.  It’s important to check the sample in the environment it will ultimately be viewed in to make sure the color is still perfect in the correct lighting.

White ink can also make a big difference.  When we aren’t printing on a bright white surface, colors look different.  This may happen with slightly off-white materials, finished or unfinished wood, or colored or even black materials.  In such a case, we would print a layer of white ink first, then run the material through again to lay down color, thus achieving the same color as if we were printing on a pure white surface.

Once we’ve achieved your perfect color, we keep that information on file so we can match colors with future jobs.  Whether you’re looking for vehicle wraps, banners, or even business cards, we can make sure your marketing strategy is consistent across all forms of signage and large format graphics.  Get perfect color on custom signs Spokane; contact us for a free quote today!

Custom Dry Fly Distilling bottle boxes on raw cedar

Spokane’s Dry Fly Distilling produces award-winning vodka, gin and wheat whiskey using only locally grown grains and botanicals.  Dry Fly prides themselves on being a true craft distillery with a farm to bottle approach, so when it came to producing a special edition box for their vodka, they needed a printer who could print to their raw cedar boards from a local sawmill.  Lee’s Pallet Service constructed the boxes for Dry Fly and brought the approximately 9.5 x 5-inch lids to Signs for Success for custom wood printing.

Printing to raw cedar required a lot of testing to get things just right.  First, we printed the color directly to the wood.  That worked well; however, we were looking for perfect color.  Hoping to get a brighter red, we then tested the process with a white underflood, or white ink printed beneath the red.  The first run gave us the perfect color we were looking for, but there were traces of white that could be seen around the edges of the logo.  Trimming the edges of the white to just under the stroke size of the image solved the problem, and it gave the customer the look he really wanted.  We printed 100 limited edition box lids four at a time on our HP FB500 Flatbed printer for the first run.  They were a hit, and we continue to do runs of this custom wood printing for Dry Fly.

Trade show banner for Inland Northwest Wildlife Council

Trade shows are a great opportunity to show your business off to the community, but if you’re just starting out, finding the funds for complex trade show booths, hardware and other accessories can be a challenge.  Banners are one of the most versatile ways to display graphics – we’ve used banner material in frames, on a billboard structure, and even as tradeshow displays.

We digitally printed a banner for Inland Northwest Wildlife Council for the recent Spokane Fair & Expo.  The banner turned out beautifully.  We also printed foamcore cutouts of a bird, fish, and their logo and mounted them to the banner to give the artwork more dimension.  Adding lighting to the display turned a simple trade show banner into a complete trade show display.

  • Double sided banners, either grommeted or with pole pocket for viewing from multiple angles.
  • Retractable banner stands or pop up banner stands with custom full color graphics
  • Feather banners in small, medium or large; feather, rectangle or teardrop.

Large fence and wall banners for 2nd Harvest

Super Smooth vinyl material has anti-curl edges that do not need to be hemmed.  This material is used in retractable banners because the clean, strong finished edge never curls when the banner is displayed.  Retractable banners expand your tradeshow display, and they are easy to pack and transport.  They also look great in retail stores, doctor’s offices and lobbies.

Blockout vinyl material is a heavy duty 18oz vinyl.  It’s perfect for double sided pole banners and street banners that may take a lot of beating.  Light is blocked so the image on the opposite side does not show through on double sided banners.  Use blockout vinyl for any outdoor banners, and you won’t regret it!

When Contract Design Associates in Spokane needed desk separation without blocking all the light, we used these mesh banners, double sided to create a great backdrop wall

Contract Design Associates separation walls

Mesh material can be used outdoors in high wind, allowing wind to pass through without blowing out the banner.  Mesh is also useful when you would like some visibility and/or light to pass through your banner.  We’ve seen mesh material used for custom printed window shades as well as office partitions.  Even if you wouldn’t necessarily call it a “banner,” mesh can bring custom printed graphics into a very modern or professional atmosphere.

Finally, there are a variety of fabrics we can print your custom artwork on.  Canvas is a popular choice because it is thick and durable.  We can also print on linen, poplin, pack cloth, and upholstery vinyl.  One customer chose to print their indoor banner on canvas for the warm, inviting feeling it brought to the cozy coffee shop atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a way to customize your business, office, street or showroom, consider a custom banner.  With all the materials available, we can customize your graphics to fit the space and mood you’re going for.  Signs for Success is a locally owned family business in Spokane, and we strive for excellent customer service, perfect color, and quick turnaround on every project.  Our innovative team can tackle any sign project, and we will offer our expertise in every stage of the process, from design to print to installation.  Get quality service and a quick turnaround on your next banner project; contact us for a free quote today!

GSI hanging window signs

Window Signs draw customers in.  Eye-catching window signs will also increase brand recognition as customers begin to recognize your retail store based on certain colors or images.  When designing window signs, you should try to include both a relevant image and an incentive.

Nordstrom Rack foam core signs Spokane Valley

The first element of your hanging window sign should be a large attractive image – too many images are confusing, but one large graphic will draw interest.  A bright color also works well when text must cover the majority of a sign.  Secondly, and just as important as the first element, is an incentive.  Whether it’s a sale, gift with purchase, or Buy One Get One special, an incentive will get customers to act.  Run a special on a product that hasn’t been moving as much as you’d like, and you’ll create more interest.  Finally, you can add a plug in for social media, your website or store credit card, but this extra information isn’t necessary to bring in the masses.  If it fits into the design, great; but if the window signs are starting to look busy, it’s best to leave that information for indoor signs or POP (point-of-purchase) signs.

Circle cut retail store signs attract customers

Nordstrom rack uses colorful circular signs to grab their customers’ attention.  Two circles carry Nordstrom slogans, while the third features a 70% off sale.  Large posters in adjacent windows feature a stylish model or a stack of sunglasses and “Hello Summer” or “Shades of Summer.”  Merle Norman Cosmetics uses hanging window signs to showcase their newest product.  Their simple and clean designs feature the product, centered, and a brief description or catch phrase.

Window signs Spokane are usually printed on thick paper poster material or lightweight foamcore.  Both are paper products suitable for indoor use.  Window signs can be hung several different ways.  They should be placed just inside the window where it can be easily viewed from the outside, but protected from the elements and other wear and tear.  One common way to hang a window sign is by top grommets and hung by thin wire hooks or thread.  Some other methods include: pole pockets, suction cups, or VHB tape.  A Signs for Success designer can assist you in choosing a suitable display or hardware system for your hanging window signs.

When considering your retail store’s curb, er, window appeal, consider adding hanging window signs that will inform and invite your customers to come in and see more.  The incentives you advertise will be sure to increase customer interest and store sales.  Contact us for a free quote on window signs Spokane!
