Entry Sign Makeover – Update Your Look Improve Image

Do you have an existing monument sign with outdated information or that’s just looking old?  Signs for Success can help with your entry sign makeover!  We will find a cost-effective solution to work with an existing monument to achieve a completely new look.

This entry monument needed a makeover when the City of Spokane took over the management of a waste facility.  They needed to be able to install lettering for the new name and logo, but the monument was poured concrete with raised concrete lettering.  The most economical solution was to create a new sign face and mount it to the front of the entry sign.  “The biggest challenge was trying to figure out how to attach a new material to the existing sign,” Signs for Success production manager Denise Gillit said.  To do this, Signs for Success installers mounted a 2×4 treated frame to the concrete face, then mounted the new sign panel to the wood frame.  “This covered the raised concrete lettering and logos very well and looks great,” Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger said of the entry sign makeover.

The sign panel is Aluminum composite (ACM), also known as Dibond, Signabond, or Epanel.  It is ideal for long term outdoor signs as it is not prone to warping in high heat or moisture like many other materials.  ACM is comprised of two thin aluminum sheets with a solid polyethylene plastic core.  We can print directly to ACM, or we can apply lettering to the surface.  Using cut vinyl lettering allows the sign face to be reused when it is time for another update.  Removing vinyl is a fairly easy process, as is installing new vinyl.  This new monument sign has cut vinyl lettering and logos.

Custom Dry Fly Distilling bottle boxes on raw cedar

Spokane’s Dry Fly Distilling produces award-winning vodka, gin and wheat whiskey using only locally grown grains and botanicals.  Dry Fly prides themselves on being a true craft distillery with a farm to bottle approach, so when it came to producing a special edition box for their vodka, they needed a printer who could print to their raw cedar boards from a local sawmill.  Lee’s Pallet Service constructed the boxes for Dry Fly and brought the approximately 9.5 x 5-inch lids to Signs for Success for custom wood printing.

Printing to raw cedar required a lot of testing to get things just right.  First, we printed the color directly to the wood.  That worked well; however, we were looking for perfect color.  Hoping to get a brighter red, we then tested the process with a white underflood, or white ink printed beneath the red.  The first run gave us the perfect color we were looking for, but there were traces of white that could be seen around the edges of the logo.  Trimming the edges of the white to just under the stroke size of the image solved the problem, and it gave the customer the look he really wanted.  We printed 100 limited edition box lids four at a time on our HP FB500 Flatbed printer for the first run.  They were a hit, and we continue to do runs of this custom wood printing for Dry Fly.

Maximum Exposure custom print on brushed metal

Metal brings a certain vibe to an art piece, whether it’s designed to complement the topic of a piece or provide contrast.  Metal prints Spokane can offer an industrial, sleek, masculine, modern, or recycled feel to any photo or image.

Maximum Exposure Photography recently brought in original digital artwork to be printed on brushed aluminum, and they provided three blank aluminum pieces for the job.  “The customer had a very specific border he wanted – 1.5″ from the top and left, and 2.5″ from the right and bottom.  He had already made custom brushed textures in those areas before printing,” Signs for Success designer Joe Wilson explained.

Using white ink underflood, we printed the sea monster image to each aluminum piece in full color.  Our HP FB500 uses UV light during printing to cure the ink as soon as it is printed.  This makes it possible for both white ink and color to be printed in a single pass through the printer.  “You load it once, and the printer prints white first, then a couple of passes later, it prints the color.  The lamps on each side cure it every time it makes a pass.  When it comes out, it’s ready to go,” Signs for Success production specialist Chris Komski explained.

“The end result was eye-popping color on brushed aluminum,” Joe said of the metal prints Spokane.

This isn’t the first time we have printed photo images on metal.  We printed several of professional photographer Crystal Toreson’s prints on black diamond metal plate.  Crystal expressed it wasn’t easy at first to find a printer who would print on her scrap metal, but once she found Signs for Success, the process was smooth and successful.  The final result was very industrial and eclectic, perfectly welding Crystal’s modern industrial style photography with her recycled metal display method.

Signs for Success can print your images on almost any material up to 2.5 inches thick with amazingly accurate color on any color substrate.  We are a locally owned family business in Spokane, and we strive for excellent customer service, perfect color, and quick turnaround on every project.  Our large production facility allows us to design, print and install everything in-house.  Get quality service and a quick turnaround on metal prints Spokane; contact us for a free quote today!

Spokane Valley Hospital Elevator Wrap

Elevator wraps Spokane offer huge impact for any business, product or message.  They’re still relatively new and unique.  People’s eyes may pass over a wall sign without noticing much, but an elevator sign is more likely to get someone’s attention.  Pair its uniqueness with the fact that people will spend time both waiting for an elevator and inside an elevator, a vinyl wrap on either side of elevator doors makes for great advertising.

A second elevator wrap at the same Spokane Valley Hospital

Research shows elevator wraps generate a 96% recall rate.  This may be due to the extra time one might spend in front of the ad as well as the lack of distractions within an elevator. An elevator wrap campaign is effective in a number of situations: in malls and office buildings, hotels and airports, universities and hospitals.  Anywhere you can expect a lot of, and varied, foot traffic is a great opportunity for an elevator wrap advertisement.

Elevator doors vary in height and width, but you can expect somewhere around 4’ x 8’ worth of advertising space.  This valuable space can be used to showcase a product, an event, an award, or a charity or fundraiser.  This elevator wrap at Spokane Valley Hospital directs viewers to the Joint Restoration Center’s website.  Changing out signage periodically will draw more interest.  By using self-adhesive vinyl with a releasable adhesive, you can easily remove an elevator wrap without leaving any residue behind.  Simply install the next wrap and enjoy.

If you have elevator space, an elevator wrap is an excellent way to utilize the space you already have.  In addition to using an elevator wrap for your own advertising space, you could sell the space, creating sponsor revenue.  The higher the elevator foot traffic, the easier it will be to secure advertisers to purchase the space.  As always, our experienced design team can help create an eye-catching design for your vinyl wrap.  Contact us for a free quote on elevator wraps Spokane today!

Go Kart wrap matches Moses Lake fleet wraps

JRCC wanted a wrap design for their fleet vehicles that really stood out and spoke about restoration.  Their fleet includes a trucks, vans, small cars, and even a go kart.  As with any wrap project, we took into consideration the size and features of each vehicle when creating these eye-catching fleet graphics.

The go kart before new go kart wrap was added to fleet wrap lineup

The JRCC go kart before new graphics were added

The fleet wraps, designed for JRCC in Moses Lake, embrace a design that goes from flames to waves, blended seamlessly in the middle with the JRCC logo.  The design really speaks to their main business of fire, smoke and water damage restoration.  The fleet wrap design was modified to fit several different vehicles, all with differing dimensions and features.  The most unique vehicle in the fleet is a go kart shaped like a miniature van.

“We had it sitting in the field out behind the barn” explained a JRCC employee.  “Our crew thought it would be fun to get it running again and use it at events like parades and golf tournaments to promote our growing company.”

That was back in 2009.  Now with several locations, including Spokane, Wenatchee, Yakima and Ellensburg, they know the go kart wrap – as well as their entire fleet wrap lineup – is working.  The fleet wraps match perfectly, which builds brand recognition and improves customer opinion.  With a freshly redesigned wrap that matches all the vehicles in their fleet, this go kart wrap will especially be enjoyed at special events, tradeshows and parades for many years to come.

John Deere Gator Matte Black Wrap, off road wraps in Spokane and Medical Lake

John Deere Gator gets Matte Black Wrap

John Deere Gator Matte Black Wrap, off road wraps

John Deere Gator Matte Black Wrap

“Pape Machinery is sponsoring the Spokane Shock football team this year and had us wrap a John Deere Gator for them.  The Gator will be used at home games and other events to promote the utility, versatility, and overall fun of this John Deere unit,” Signs for Success owner John Bogensberger explained.

This cool matte black wrap is dotted with decals all over the hood and body.  A giant Spokane Shock logo decal tops the vehicle, and is placed strategically to be seen from the stadium seating all around, making this one awesome looking John Deere Gator.

Off Road Wraps

Off road wraps are unique because we often work with less common, rugged shapes.  “One challenge with the Gator was the roof,” Signs for Success designer Kimberly Hoffmann said.  “There were deep grooves in the roof, and we had to calculate how the graphic was going to lay out going in and out of the grooves.”  Kimberly took special care to make sure the logo would not be distorted when it was applied.

Decals were strategically placed all over this off road wraps

Decals were strategically placed all over this off road wrap

The installation was a little more time-consuming than most.   Before installation even began, most of the parts of the gator had to be removed, then re-installed after the wrap was complete.  With all the smaller decals that had to be installed over the wrap, our install team worked tirelessly to get every decal just right in a layout that is seamless and looks effortless.    The finished product was absolutely worth the extra time.

We were able to work with the unique shapes, grooves and parts of the John Deere Gator to create a great promotional vehicle wrap.  We have designed, printed and installed hundreds of vehicle wraps, including off road wraps.  Although most of them are for cars, trucks, SUVs and other common vehicles, we have successfully wrapped such uncommon vehicles as boats, motorcycles, go karts, Zambonis, golf carts, and more.  If you have a unique vehicle you want to make into a promotional tool, or just want to make it your own, let Signs for Success help you achieve your vision!  Contact us today for a free quote.

Retro Art Restoration: Recreating Pinball Glass

Restored arcade pinball glass with digital printing

Restored arcade pinball glass

Because we create custom digital prints, we often get interesting and unusual requests.  These are fun projects that test our creativity and show off just much our equipment can do.  We were recently asked to restore a retro pinball machine to its original pop art glory.

“The customer had purchased a used pinball machine online.  It was a “Williams Heat Wave” machine.  He said he used to play it for hours when he was a child,” Signs for Success designer Will Oakley explained.  However, when the customer received his beloved pinball machine, the glass was broken into three pieces.  “It appeared at some point someone had shot it with a BB gun,” Will said.  “We scanned the pieces he had, recreated the missing areas from scratch and reprinted the image onto a piece of glass that the customer provided.”

Digital Printing

Signs for Success specializes in custom large-format digital printing.  Digital printing can translate into car and truck wraps, large signs, posters, banners, decals, and so much more.  This project incorporated our extensive knowledge and experience in backlit signs.  Digital printing makes full color backlit signs possible, but getting the color and saturation just right can be tricky when a sign is backlit half the time, and front-lit the other half of the time.  Too often, we see dark sign graphics during the day and washed out signs at night.  So we came up with a solution – layering color with white ink during printing allows a light-blocking layer so the same color and saturation can be seen whether the sign is lit from the front or back.  We used the same technique for the pinball glass.

“There are areas of the image that don’t show up until the image is backlit.  We were able to recreate these areas using layers of white ink and color,” Will explained.  When the lights come on, the graphics really pop out thanks to a layer of white ink and a second layer of color behind those images.

With a little design savvy, state-of-the-art FB500 flatbed printer, and understanding of color and white ink, we were able to recreate the broken pinball glass.  The customer was ecstatic that we were able to restore his pinball machine and will be able to once again “play it for hours.”

History of Ford: Custom Timeline Wall Wrap

Timeline wall wrap on auto showroom wall

Ford has a rich history of American entrepreneurship and innovation.  This custom timeline wall wrap showcases just how far Ford has come since its beginnings in the late 1800s.  The wall wrap project began when Gus Johnson Ford wanted to cover an entire length of their showroom wall with a custom printed wall covering.  Signs for Success partnered with The Quinn Group to come up with a good solution.

“When Bonnie Quinn, from The Quinn Group, asked us to brainstorm wall coverings for Gus Johnson Ford, we met her down there to do a wall test to see what materials would work best,” Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger said.  “Our options were wallpaper or decal coverings for the wall.  The wall is textured, so wallpaper was out.  We opted for 3M Control Tac high performance wrap vinyl, based on the wall test results.”  Control Tac wrap vinyl is what we frequently use on custom vehicle wraps.  It contours to fit every curve and crevice of a vehicle for a smooth paint-like finish, so it was perfect for adhering to a textured wall.

Dimensional logos and photos on timeline wall wrap

Adding Dimension to the Custom Wall Wrap

During the design process, we learned they didn’t just want a flat image, but photos and logos that stood off the wall for added dimension.  “In brainstorming, we talked about stretched canvas, printed acrylic, gatorfoam, and Sintra/PVC.  We also talked about mounting with standoffs, panel clips, and blocking out with double stick tape,” Vanessa explained.  Any of these solutions could have worked, giving a slightly different effect.  When Vanessa got the final approved artwork, however, many of the dimensional pieces were odd-shaped other than rectangular, so they opted for waterjet cut sintra/PVC at 1/4″ thick.  Adding blocks of ½” thick gator to the back of each sign gave them the 3D look Gus Johnson Ford was hoping for.

Wall wrap spans entire length of showroom

Installation went smoothly; the wall wrap was applied first, then the dimensional logos were installed with heavy-duty double stick tape on top of the wrap.  The showroom looks amazing with the new timeline wall wrap.  Signs for Success offers unique custom printing solutions for any surface.  Contact us for more information or to request a free quote!

Spokane River’s Large Banner gets Steel Cable Installation

large banner in downtown Spokane

Welcome to Spokane banner installed on cable system

The much anticipated opening of Huntington Park in downtown Spokane required special preparation to make sure the park—and the view from the park—were just perfect.

“This large banner project was initiated by the Spokane Chapter of Executive Women’s International Committee who was hosting EWI Spring Conference.  A reception was to be held in the newly renovated Huntington Park located on the south shore of the lower falls in Spokane WA,” Signs for Success owner John Bogensberger explained.  The park looked great; however, “on the opposite side of the river was a structure that while slated for repairs and rehabilitation, was still an eye sore to the view from the new park.”

Huntington Park was a project by Avista and the City of Spokane, so they sponsored a 6′ x 60′ Banner to cover the decaying wall during the event and then again one week later at the Official Grand opening of the park.

large banner installation on decaying wall in Spokane

Spokane River lower falls wall before banner installation

The giant banner looked great across the river, and it gave added exposure to Avista and the City of Spokane for these important events.

Large Banner Finishing and Installation

Banners aren’t meant to last forever, but we use the best industry methods to make sure ours last as long as possible.  A strong, outdoor durable 13 oz. vinyl banner material and welded hems make a robust combination.  Even though this banner would only be displayed for a few days, we needed to make sure the extra-large banner was securely attached to the old wall.

Signs for Success installed a steel cable system in the decaying wall to install the large banner on.  The banner was anchored by securing reinforced grommeted edges to two cables that ran the entire length of the banner.  Thanks to the cable system, this large banner was a success.  The simple “Welcome to Spokane” message covered the old wall and extended the beautiful space created by Huntington Park.

Aluminum Composite Lap Desks Transform Education in Africa

These lap desks are printed and laminated, double sided, then cut out, given to school kids in Africa for a great learning experience

PAL Lap desks are custom printed aluminum composite material

PAL stands for Portable Academic Lapdesk.  “PAL was born out of years of working in Malawi and Zambia and seeing the dire needs of the schools there,” PAL Non-Profit founder Jackie Wells said.  “In 2009 we developed the idea of making a lap desk that contained all the basics of education on either side of the lap desk.   This would give the students both a desk to work from and basically a visual textbook.”

It took Joel and Jackie Wells several years to develop their non-profit organization, design and copyright the lap desk, get a design patent, and try different prototypes.  During the prototype process, Jackie contacted Signs for Success to see what they could come up with.  “John was willing to think outside the box and came up with the idea of printing directly onto Aluminum Composite.   By laminating over the printing we are providing extra protection as well as UV protection,” Jackie said.Printing Direct to aluminum composite for PAL project

Aluminum Composite Material

Aluminum composite is made of two sheets of thin aluminum with a solid polyethylene core.  It is outdoor durable, heat resistant and water proof.  Lamination increases the life of the print and further protects from UV rays and normal wear and tear.

Signs for Success designer Vanessa Bogensberger helped with setup and corrections to provided art files.  Running test prints for the double sided printing took some time and tweaking to get it just right, but with approval from the customer, hundreds of these unique lap desks went to production.  Finally, in June 2014, after much preparation and determination, Joel and Jackie completed the production and distribution of 550 PALs throughout African countries Malawi and Zambia.

Lap desks Get Enthusiastic Response

The distribution to village schools included teacher training.  They’ve since heard back from several teachers about the success of the lap desks.  One teacher wrote, “By seeing the PAL some of our older learners are self-correcting things they had learned wrong.”  Another wrote, “teaching becomes simple to me because learners participate actively using these PALs.”

In a letter of endorsement from the Director of Basic Education in Malawi, Dr. Chimombo states, “The PAL gains the attention of our students with its bright and colourful presentation and gives them a global perspective.  Many of our schools have limited supplies.  If we can establish the distribution of this tool into these schools the PAL will provide them with a much needed resource.  The teacher’s manual that accompanies the PAL will provide great support to instructors.”

Joel and Jackie are in the midst of a RocketHub social media campaign that will last until April 15 to raise funds to take 600 more PALs into Africa in September 2015. See a great video of PALs in action Learn more about PAL.
